Our journey is a testament to hard work, entrepreneurial spirit, and a deep commitment to the communities we serve.
The Legacy of Mr. Coetzee
The story of Midas in the Western Cape begins with Mr. Coetzee, whose entrepreneurial drive shaped what Midas is today. After completing 9 months in the army, Mr. Coetzee attended Elsenburg Agricultural College for a year before working at Ceres Fruit Growers, where he helped establish the first juice factory and witnessed the processing of the very first apple.
His tireless work ethic continued when he took on night shifts, working 60-hour weeks. Driven by ambition, he borrowed R1,000 from the bank to purchase a 2-ton truck and hired a driver. After night shifts, they travelled to the West Coast to buy snoek, which they sold in various towns. This venture led him to open a fish shop, selling both fresh and fried fish.
His entrepreneurial journey didn’t stop there—Mr. Coetzee began selling ice cream using bicycles, operated a scrap metal and plastic bottle business, and secured a contract to run four school buses for a decade.
In 1982, his foray into the automotive industry began when he opened the first vehicle parts store in Ceres, which later became Midas Ceres. His business grew rapidly, with branches opening in Paarl, Robertson, Worcester, and Piketberg. His strong partnership with Midas and securing the rights to NAPA allowed him to place direct orders from factories, ensuring high-quality parts for his customers.

His son, Erhard Coetzee, now manages Midas Paarl, Midas Worcester, and Midas Robertson. Under his leadership, we continue to uphold our family values and commitment to customer satisfaction.
